How to Give yourself a Home Manicure

by Mary Kuznetsova

We all want lovely soft hands with perfectly manicured nails but sometimes you just can't manage to find the time to go to the beauty salon but never fear we've put together a quick do-it-yourself guide so that your hands are never negelcted...

What you need: Nail polish remover, cotton pads, a bowl of warm water, a towel, some lotion, cuticle cream, hand cream, a nail file, base coat and your favourite nail polish.

Step 1: Using the cotton pad remove old nail polish with the remover. It's better to use a cotton pad rather than a cotton ball which has a tendency to shred away.

Step 2: File your nails to your preferred length, making the edge even. Ensure you file in one direction as a seesaw movement may break the nail.

Step 3: Soak your hands in a bowl of warm water containing some lotion for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 4: Dry hands and apply the cuticle cream followed by the hand cream.

Step 5: Apply the base coat, this serves to hold nail polish in place making it last longer. Then apply your nail polish of choice. Aim to completely cover the nail in three smooth strokes.

Step 6: Make sure you do not apply too much polish as it will not dry and the slightest movement may ruin it. Dry for a good twenty minutes to make sure you can use your hands normally and not be in danger of chipping or marking your polish.

And ta-da there's your home manicure.
